Book Review : The Secret Lake, by Karen Inglis

I decided to read The Secret Lake, by Karen Inglis, because I love anything that includes time travel. The description on Amazon was fairly enticing and Karen Inglis is a self published author. All ticks in my mind.

The book is aimed at 8 - 11 year olds and centers around Stella and her younger brother, Tom, who have moved from Hong Kong to London with their family. Very soon they notice strange happenings in their garden, with the neighbour's dog, Harry, disappearing for days at a time and then reappearing really wet. Quickly in the story, they come accross a tunnel leading them to a lake, and back to their house, but a 100 years in the past. Once back in time they meet a boy called Jack, who is wanted for a theft he did not commit. They find two sisters called Sophie and Emma living in their home.

Like all good children's adventure books they have to go on a mission to save Jack from being punished for the theft he did not commit.

The book is well written, and very easy to read. It is not particularly long and would be a good book to give to children within the 8 -11 bracket. There could be more character development and suspense, and it was a little predictable at times, but I expect most children would enjoy the book nevertheless, even those who are a little averse to reading. I would give this a 4.0 /5.
